Why do most gay films have tragic or sad endings?
It's a random question, but I dig deep to answer the questions.
Hello Drafter,
Last night I saw the film Firebird on Amazon Prime.
It’s a solid historical film set during the Cold War, that follows two men in the KGB military that fall in love.
In a nutshell, it is a gay-themed film about forbidden love and its effects on careers and family.
If gay love bothers you, honestly close the email, go outside and touch grass.
People fall in love with whom they choose.
I never understood when people get squeamish when gay people kiss on screen.
Like bro - they are not kissing you. LOL, close your eyes.
Anyway, I’ve seen many of these films -
Brokeback Mountain
Moonlight
Mysterious Skin
The one thing that irks me is that love is never allowed to last in gay-themed movies.
It’s punishment for the reader or consumer of-the-art form.
Like they don’t get love because of the lifestyle they have chosen.
I present a question to you, a creator.
Are you writing?
Are you working on a story?
Are you staying true to your characters?
Those are a lot of questions, but one thing is to never stray from your story, even if it pisses off the viewer for being invested in the character.
I know a lot of writers are subscribed to this newsletter.
I write these musings as a way of helping people flesh out their narratives.
Push past their resistance and create a story that is true to form.
Create authentically, even if it is just you that wants to read this story.
Remember that the reader or consumer of your sorry is rooting for your hero.
If they have bought into your story, they are going for the ride.
Don’t disappoint us.
If the story in your heart doesn’t have a happy ending as a way to teach a lesson, or moral.
I understand.
The world is not some big happy place.
I’ve been to New York, where misery is sold with a slice of pizza.
One thing to remember, though, is that the world is cold enough.
People are looking for warmth through storytelling.
Give it to them….or not?
Best,
Jordan Baylor
