Hello Drafters,
I pissed people off on Twitter, and I don’t care.
Here’s how it all started.
I was on Twitter and saw a video of rapper DaBaby rapping over a Lauryn Hill song.
I thought it was dope until I got to this line in particular.
And all I did was point it out.
When I consume art, I have been more intentional with the art I consume. I ask myself, “what is the subtext saying?”
What is the art saying without explicitly saying?
I assumed he was bragging about the DaBaby's Self-Defense Claim in 2018 Killing.
Which is pretty wild to think about, if you did murder someone to protect yourself, the last thing I would do is brag about the shit.
Weirder than adding that to your art - it’s rap, I understand.
The weirdest part about the entire interaction are the outpouring of DM’s and quote tweets insulting me and protecting DaBaby are shocking and funny because I don’t know any of the people.
More importantly, neither does DaBaby.
Peep this direct message.
It’s hilarious that one little statement could cause such a ripple effect.
This all started with me having an opinion.
A point of view that rubbed people the wrong way.
I’ve had people write long diatribes about why DaBaby had to kill someone and why he has to keep telling you about it in his songs.
I learned - people are weird man.
Celebrity worship is a real thing.
Twitter is fucking weird, filled with weird weirdos who love ignorance.
Some of my favorite rappers from the past 5 years are dead.
Young black men are cut down in the prime of their careers due to gun violence.
XXXTentacion
Nipsey Hussle (saw him in concert 2 times)
Pop Smoke (was legit the next 50 Cent)
Takeoff (My favorite Migo)
Someone saw their light and snuffed it out with a bullet, and it hurts to know that’s something beautiful we will never get back.
A family that will never get their successful family member.
These young men will never get to have children or finish raising them because someone was jealous of their success.
If people can’t see that there is a connection between our words in music and real life. You have got to be willfully ignorant at this point.
A rapper can say I’ve got sold-out shows, beautiful cars, women, and money.
Like a Thanos *SNAP* it manifests and shows up.
Like, wow, didn’t he rap that 2 albums ago?
Remember when Kanye rapped on ‘Stronger’
Then after the Graduation album, he started dating Amber Rose - who was a woman who would do anything for the limelight.
I say all that to say - Kanye proves time and time again your words have power.
You have the personal ability to create the future you want.
Speak greatness to yourself.
Tell yourself you are worthy.
You are born to succeed. Born to win.
Use your words to build your esteem - not tear it down.
Life is already hard enough, don’t make it harder.
Best,
Jordan “Let Me Shut My Mouth” Baylor
P.S. Apart of me feels like a troll for the comment. Idk, what are your thoughts?
Reply directly to the email - I seriously want to hear your opinion, on this or music in general.
