WGA & ATA Battle = Slow Progress is better than NO Progress
Another day… another update into the WGA (Writers Guild of America) - ATA (Association of Talent Agents) battle that is dividing the the writer guild, and forcing writers to take a side. “You’re either with us or against us” is the mindset being presented while writer Gavin Polone, who seemingly started this whole “talent agencies are stealing from us writers" conversation reports that he continuously asks the question of “How much easier can it be to reduce the fees paid to writers working for a studio while that studio is ALSO charged with negotiating the deals on behalf of those same writers?”
His concern, is that once the talent agencies (which are producing film and television projects) are able to double dip in both forms of payment, what’s to stop them from treating writers like low level employees and cut their pay or not negotiate for higher payment all together. What’s to stop them from moving in the best interest of the talent agency and not the client they represent? What’s their incentive to be fair?
Gavin states that talks between the two parties are moving forward, but not much progress has been made. ATA has offered the WGA writers, and I quote an
”insignificant portion of agency package fees” and a set of “Agency Standards," which is basically the ‘police’ … self policing.
Gavin’s future is a bold claim as he predicts writer’s will need agents less than ever before. The technology is evolving and their submission process is being picked up in droves by TV showrunners, and producers.
It’s a very bold claim, but the proof is in the pudding.
New Kubrick, Who Dis?
Do we have any Kubrick (first name not needed) enthusiasts in the house? Raise your hands high! After ceremoniously being removed from the vault at the London College of Communication, one of Stanley (IF you still needed a first name) Kubrick’s un-produced screenplays is being turned into a television series. It’s the first staple product from the newly established European production company Media Musketeers. Here’s a brief synopsis for the series.
“God Fearing Man” is based on a book by Herbert Emerson Wilson and Kubrick’s original screenplay which tells the true story of a Canadian church minister-turned-safecracker who became one of the most successful bank robbers in U.S. history.
The show is slated as a four episode capsule series with Philip Hobbs, a longtime collaborator and producer of Kubrick’s work to tapped to oversea the production.
Gary Lennon Preps ‘Jerry’ As Feature Directorial Debut
With the impending end of the series POWER, its co-showrunner Gary Lennon is plunging headfirst into his next endeavor his debut feature film titled, Jerry. This autobiographical coming of age film, follows a young man’s rough and ultimately redemptive ride to discover his sexuality and true passion.
The film begins shooting next year.
“Gary bares his soul as he takes on his journey from living on the streets to finding his calling as a celebrated storyteller,” says Jennie Frankel Frisbie (of Authentic Talent and Literary Management Co.) and Galt Niederhoffer of Jerry.
