How To Be IMPULSIVE To Create Artđ©âđš
*DRUMROLL*, please.
Here is day three of the tresâ part series of Miles Davisâ Keys to Success.
A quick recap for all my short-minded people.
Listen To The Kids - Miles Davisâ uses the power of the youth, recruiting four young musicians ranging in age from 17 -23 years of age. The oldest being a young Herbie Hancock on piano. He brought them experience and taught them how to play jazz on a professional level, while simultaneously, the youth brought Miles the sound of that era.
Never Look Back - This key involves Miles pushing his craft, his music, the fans taste and his style-forward by constantly straying from what was expected of him and his music. âI would rather kill myself than play the old shitâ was Milesâ mantra for his music, and the way he lived his life. Move forward by going forward into uncharted territory.
Create Without Thought -Â this is where we will deep dive into today.
Now, this is Key 3, the one key that should be thrown into every aspect of your life.
I have a hard time communicating with trepidatious people, you know, people that are tepid, timid, those who question themselves a hundred times while they are ruminating over a problem.
It is best to have a SURE tone in your answer even if you only know it to be 40% certain. Have the tone of IT IS LAW in your voice.
If you are corrected, fine, but donât show that you question yourself in your voice.
Itâs a sign that triggers weakness. Even if you aren't weak.
Miles Davis knew this to be certain. Unflattering adjectives have always described Miles:
Brooding.
Asshole.
Aggressive.
Talented Prick.
Drug Addict.
TIMID, or UNSURE, were never used. He was always sure of where he was going, and you could count on the trip being a wild ride!
In the 1950s, Jazz was booming in France. It became the greatest new past time beating out eating croissants while smoking.
French people embraced the art behind Jazz and the philosophy of creating authentically.
Having a rough idea of where you wanted to go, but leaving art a chance of spontaneity to arise. CREATING WITHOUT THOUGHT, keeping the concept pure, and letting true art have a chance in the creation process.
Milesâ style of jumping on stage night after night and having a jam session instead of the same concert night after night inspired the French creators.
Some were writers.
Some were actors.
Some were filmmakers. The filmmakers really ran with the concept.
Miles inspired a filmmaker, the great Louis Malle, who wanted to create films in the same style in which Miles created concerts.
Stripping away all the background.
Letting actors act in real settings. No paid background extras, theyâll just capture real people.
Just letting the film be as authentic as it could be without all the limitations that filmmaking restricts at times.
Malle hired Miles to create the soundtrack for the film Ascenseur Pour L'echafaudbetter known as Elevator to the Gallows.
It starred the young French actress Jeanne Moreau.
What made this film special was not only was a decent French wave film,
but that it used Miles's creation techniques by focusing on the actress with experimental shots that pushed the cameraâs use in storytelling.
Everything wasnât planned, allowing spontaneity into the filmsâ creation process.
This movie was truly befitting of Milesâ crafting of the filmâs soundtrack.
It was Mileâs first soundtrack ever, and do you know how he made it?
Improvisation. Miles projected the completed film onto the wall, and solely with his trumpet, improvised the entire filmâs score solely on the images and the feelings that he interpreted on-screen.
A MAN and his TRUMPET.
That was it.
A solo trumpet.
For a solo female lead.
Magic was made.
My challenge to you is âwhat if you created art without thinking?â
Not letting that frontal lobe voice thatâs always analyzing crap hold you back!
What if you just let the words flow?
Just let the paint hit the canvas.
Just create your truth. No remorse. Not thinking of anyone or anything else.
Finally, just being that beautiful, creative beast doing it.
What would happen?
Take action and find outâŠ
