Fighting is a dangerous game.
You can step into the ring and get crippled, disfigured, or come out a vegetable.
Iām an MMA fanatic, and what I love about the sport is itās somewhere that a person can lose one night and be allowed to come back, even stronger.
Iāve seen it time and time again.
One fighter. In particular, summons the spirit of what I like to call an āengine fighter.ā
A fighter that keeps going.
His name is Uriah Faber.
If you know him, heās known for his explosive strength, short stature, and infamous butt-chin.
(No seriously, his chin looks like it twerks)
Uriah recently retired and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, where he evaluated his illustrious career.
If you know one thing about Faber, itās that he had a ton of title shots.
He got title shots like I got speeding tickets when I rented an M3 Sedan.
Across his entire career, Faber received SIX.
SIX TITLE SHOTS.
Do you know how insane that is for a fighter to get to the goal post SIX TIMES?
Get a crack at it and fall short, over and over again!
And in six shots, Faber never got the belt.
He never got the gold.
He lost ALL of his given (6) title shots.
But in my eyes, Faber is not a loserā¦ he is anything but.
Heās a guy who always could reframe it in perspective. Faber took the proceeds from his fights, and launched a gym called ALPHA MALE out of Sacramento, CA.
His arch-nemesis UFC champion at the time, DominickĀ Cruz called the gym āALPHA FAILā because of the way Faber always fell short of the GOLD.
The gold was elusive at ALPHA MALE.
That was until Faberās protege Cody Garbrandt got a crack at the belt against Dominick Cruz himself.
Faber was able to take all of his knowledge, shortcomings & insider experience being in the ring with Cruz.
He boiled and condensed that knowledge, and poured it into Garbrandt.
The knowledge allowed Cody not only to beat Cruz, but beat him by an impressively wide margin.
Cruz (black trunks) couldnāt touch Garbrandt (blue trunks) for five long rounds.
With all that being saidā¦ do you still think that Faberās six titles shots were a failure if the knowledge he attained helped his PROTOGE' reach the promise land?
Just like life, we may have failures, things we fall short on, but itās all about the meaning you place on it.
Itās all about perspective.
Whatās a way you could reframe a failure you encountered to make it a POSITIVE for you?
