A.I. attempts to tell us how gender and box office performance go hand in hand
GOOD AFTERNOON. Go forth and dominate your drafts this weekend.
The good people over at Scriptbook, an Artificial Intelligence screenplay analysis company. They did an extensive analysis of how “a lead actors gender affected box office performance” of films released between 2014-2017. The analysis dug deep even including the Bechdel Test as a factor in their analysis.
The Bechdel Test is a measure of the representation of women in fiction. It’s a simple test which names the following three criteria:
(1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man.
With all that in mind the biggest takeaway from the study was that the data does not support the claim that female-led movies do better at the box office, but neither do male-led ones.

BLACK EXCELLENCE available for binge soon
Creator/ TV show runner Kenya Barris will star opposite Rashida Jones in"Black Excellence" Netflix’s upcoming comedy from the streaming giant. We all can agree Kenya knows how to bring the funny, and with his hit ABC series Black-ish, it’s always a curveball of awkward with Kenya. The “Black Excellence” series marks the start of his nine figure pact with Netflix, so don’t be surprised that the comedy is swinging for the fences.
The show is said to have a “Curb Your Enthusiasm“ tone, and highlights Barris' approach to parenting, relationships, race, and culture.
Legendary Screenwriter Alvin Sargent has passed away (1927 - 2019)
Longtime and accomplished screenwriter Alvin Sargent is credited for penning more than two dozen feature screenplays from the 1960s and well into the 2010s, most recently The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Spider-Man 3 (2007) and Spider-Man 2 (2004). His feature credits also include What About Bob? (1991), Other People’s Money (1991) and Unfaithful (2002).
We lost a legend who’s work will be studied, long after he’s gone. This is why we’re screenwriters, we’re here to create art for our time on Earth to make a difference and to entertain. That is exactly what Alvin did. He wrote one of the most personal and arguably best superhero films of all-time with the often times misunderstood Spiderman 2.
He was quoted as saying, "When I die, I'm going to have written on my tombstone, “Finally, a plot”.

WRITER’s quote of the day
“I think too many people are too organized; they’ve got it all worked out, instead of hearing their characters first. Get the goop out first, then organize.” - Alvin Sargent
