RIP #WhiskeyCavalier
Grand opening, grand closing. It was just Friday that we reported the doors were being reopened to evaluate the potential revival of ABC’s recently cancelled series ‘Whiskey Cavalier.’ Well rumors of the #COMEBACK are cancelled as— ABC will not be reversing its cancellation decision.
Writer and creator David Hemingson thanked his fans one last time for the fight that they brought to ABC to resuscitate #WhiskeyCavalier as their cause officially laid to rest.
I hear the big ratings jump in the finale, which featured cliffhangers, paired with strong delayed viewing numbers for last week’s episode were a major factor in ABC brasses decision to reconsider the show’s cancellation.
✍🏻The Writer’s Corner
Today, we introduce this new column dedicated solely to professional writers who unselfishly pass along advice to help you finish that latest draft of yours.
In todays’ column, we get words from Baltimore native, Darryl Wharton-Rigby, a Baltimore native, and who has worked diligently for years to be a great storyteller. Darryl has an MFA in Film Directing from Chapman University and was a Lecturer for Morgan State University's Screenwriting and Animation program, so he has lived the advice that he is passing along.
Darryl’s writing credits include NBC’s Homicide: Life On The Street and the dramedy Just Deal. Recently, he has worked as a script consultant for Worldwide Nate: African Adventures and A Girl Named Joe.
Darryl’s sage advice:
Finish the script you are writing. When you get a new "better" idea, jot it down, and keep working on the one you started. You can always re-write and make better a completed draft. Having a bunch of incomplete screenplays will only stall your career.
A second bit of advice:
Learn to accept and embrace the power of the word "no." Every "no" will prepare you for when the "yes," eventually comes along.
Darryl is currently working on Don Doko Don, a documentary about a taiko group that was displaced after the 2011 Great Quake as well as his next narrative feature film.
His film, Stay, had its distribution acquired by Summer Hill Films and is awaiting a late 2019 or early 2020 release. You can catch the trailer for his film here.
Darryl lives in Saitama, Japan and credits his wife and three children as his ultimate muses.
Thank you Darryl.

Akira! YES PLEASE?
It’s official writer/ director Taika Waititi will be helming the live-action film Akira, which has been in development for 10+ years.
Warner Brothers purchased the rights for live action back in 2002 and has since courted tons of directors to tackle the project:
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen director Stephen Norrington was once attached, as well as potential directors that included Allen and Albert Hughes, Christopher Nolan, George Miller, Justin Lin, and even Jordan Peele.
Waititi has previously stressed that if he were to make an Akira movie, he wouldn’t whitewash the story:
“Asian teenagers would be the way to do it for me and probably no, not, like no name, I mean sort of unfound, untapped talent. Yeah, I’d probably want to take it a bit back more towards the books.”
So we won’t have to worry about any ‘Ghost in the Shell’ controversy this time around, stay patient my friends as the official announcement date of Waititi’s version of Akira will hit theaters on May 21, 2021.
“I always felt like it was something that could do with a unique take,” Waititi said about the project a couple of years ago. “But, I don’t believe the world needs a remake of the anime, I think for me it would be, if there’s any real possibility for doing it, I would really just want to look at an adaptation of the books in a new way.”
Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs? More Frasier Anyone?
Last year it was revealed that Kelsey Grammer and CBS were looking to revive the 90’s greatest acting ensemble ever assembled in the form of Frasier. The last word on the reboot was that Grammer had not found a premise worthy, stating:
“No, there’s been no premise that has come along that has the necessary fire. A lot of us are quite committed to the concept that you would never try to redo what we once had.”
Grammer publicly stated his intention to create the series and bring back original cast members, as this is probably a project they shouldn’t be tackled without the original call backs from the hit series.
Now we are learning in a new report from Deadline that there are “six different ideas” in contention for a Frasier revival. The news came from Grammer himself, who stated:
“That little folder is filled with six different ideas that are all in contention for what may be the new Frasier. A continuation of Frasier. They’re similar, it’s a new life, in a new city.”
Personally, I think you should leave masterpieces where they stand, but those same words were probably uttered when the spin-off for ‘Fraiser’ was announced.
