AGA & WGA talks to M.I.A.
The stalemate between the ATA & WGA continues as the Agency for the Performing Arts has added its name to the ever-growing list of mid-level agencies saying they won’t sign the WGA’s new Code of Conduct.
“APA has no intention of signing the WGA’s Code of Conduct, which in its current form will have a negative impact on our clients by limiting their choice, opportunities and privacy, among other things,” said Jim Gosnell, president and CEO of APA.
If you’re unaware, The Code requires agencies to provide writers’ contracts, invoices and deal memos to the WGA and allows auditing. It’s attempts to provide financial transparency for the writer’s and they’ve assured the ATA that none of the information will be made available to other writers or agents.
The cornerstone of The Code is its ban on packaging fees and agency-affiliated production companies, which the guild says are blatant conflicts of interest to their fiduciary duty to clients.
The ATA is holding strong as low level agencies are signing, The Code which would ban packaging fees and agency affiliations with related production companies.
It’s still an us versus them mentality as both sides are flexing muscles, and staying true to the true leader, their pocketbooks.
Fast & Furious Adds Femme Screenwriters
Actress Michelle Rodriguez is back to tackle another outing as Leticia “Letty” Ortiz in “Fast & Furious 9.” This is great news for all F&F enthusiasts as Rodriguez vowed she wouldn’t come back unless there was “some love to the women of the franchise on the next one.”
Universal has announced there’s a female-centric “Furious” spinoff to be written by three women: Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
The female writing working on “Fast and Furious 9” will be the first to help script the main series. “Furious” will be the second planned spinoff from the F&F multi-verse as Universal is releasing “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” in theaters August 2nd.
Queen Latifah is A SUPERWOMAN
Queen Latifah, the ever-evolving renaissance woman of this day, recently launched The Queen Collective, a program that provides women behind the camera with funding, resources, mentoring and a platform to debut their work.
In its inaugural year, the collective selected two black women, B. Monet and Haley Elizabeth Anderson, to debut their documentaries, “Ballet After Dark” and “If There Is Light” at the Tribeca Film Festival and orchestrated distribution deals with Hulu.
This is a huge step, and we all know with The Queen’s vision, we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg for female creators.
“Ownership has been important to me and my partner,” she told HuffPost. “We want to own what we create. You have to be willing to sacrifice with certain things and not take all the upfront money. You get to own it in perpetuity and make money on it forever if you own it. If you sell it, then you don’t own it. Get as much money as you can if you’re going to sell it, but just know that somebody else is probably going to make the bulk of the money.”
These are wise words from a female that has continuously created content in this male-driven industry for 30 yrs. and who has remained unapologetically truthful and relevant in her career. Ownership above all else … wise words from The Queen. All hail The Queen!!!
