✍🏻Larry Wilmore Inks Major Overall Deal With Universal Television
Brilliant comedian Larry Wilmore (Co-Creator of Grown-ish and Insecure) will be moving to Universal Television with a rich four-year overall deal. During his 4 year tenure Wilmore will develop new projects through his Wilmore Films production company. This is a fresh start with a new company as he exits his ABC Studios pact which saw last years comedy (ABC’s The Mayor) come and GO with a one season cancellation.
Joining him at Universal TV is Candace Rodney, VP of development for Wilmore Films.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be back at Universal Television to join Pearlena and her amazing team!,” Wilmore said. “As a teen I actually used to sneak on the Universal lot and dream of belonging there some day. It’s nice to not have to sneak on anymore. I’m living my dream!”
This is a much deserved pact for a creator who has a consistent reputation for creating television shows, that exude heart and family values. (The Bernie Mac Show being a personal favorite of mine.)
✍🏻Writer Peter Gaffney sells horror Spec to Universal Pictures
Universal just bought a spec horror script entitled Don't Go in the Water from writer Peter Gaffney, Deadline reports.
The film is described as "a suspenseful monster movie in the vein of The Shallows and The Meg."
The film is being fast-tracked as the spec’s purchase price was said to be in the mid- to high-six figures for Don’t Go in the Water. 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Real Steel) and Dan Levine and Lit Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner are producing with Adam Rodin.
Gaffney is a New York-based writer who previously set up the sci-fi specs Harvest at LeVision Entertainment and Terrestrial at Lionsgate.
This is exciting news for screenwriters who always wonder if your original idea will sell in a world full of reboots, remakes, sequels and rehashes. Finally something original breaks the mold to start anew.
✍🏻‘Fleabag’ Creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge Gives Input on James Bond
Renaissance woman Phoebe Waller-Bridge writer/creator/actor gave her two cents on her new gig as screenwriter on the upcoming James Bond. She’s opened up about her contribution to the forthcoming James Bond film, calling the films “absolutely relevant now!”
“There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of who he is and the way he treats women,” she said. “I think that’s bollocks. I think he’s absolutely relevant now. It has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to this character.”
She will be giving a feminine perspective of who Bond is as an alpha male/kick ass spy who shoots people in the face.
The Fleabag creator, who adapted Killing Eve for television, told Deadline about her work polishing the script for the Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed film, which is due for release in 2020.
She admitted she’s a true fan of Daniel Craig’s turn as Bond, stating “When I saw his Bond for the first time, there was a wryness to his performance that I really loved.” “So, I was really excited about writing dialogue for him. I mean, the script was there. It’s already there. I think it’s unfair to say that I’m writing the script.”
Whether she’s writing the script or punching up dialogue that’s not the issue, the issue is whether or not she’ll get to bring that originality that exudes from her other work. The series Killing Eve is a game changer in spy genre, the series really pushes the viewer, and makes you question “What if?”
The British auteur has had an exhaustingly busy couple of months as both Fleabag wrapped its second season in April, and her other hit series Killing Eve wrapped its second season this past week to rave reviews.
