✍🏻 ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Lands At Netflix
Denzel Washington promised us more August Wilson adaptations of his work, and he surely is delivering with the latest movie adaptation of the stage play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” for Netflix. The film stars Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman with a script by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, based on the award-winning play by August Wilson.
George C. Wolfe (“Lackawanna Blues”) will direct. The story takes place in Chicago circa 1927 during a recording session at a white-owned studio with the legendary Mother of the Blues Gertrude “Ma” Rainey.
This powerful play centers around racism and exploitation in the music industry during the 1920’s. Specifically, this play centers around Ma and her band and the struggles they have among themselves, well as with the white establishment. The play won the 1985 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play.
Production starts next month in Pittsburgh.
✍🏻‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Goes to Paramount
Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth (Munich, Forrest Gump, The Insider),has done it again by writing a new the screenplay based on The Lost City of Z author David Grann’s book, which is titled Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.
Roth’s script sparked a bidding war that resulted in a company called Imperative Entertainment locking it down for $5 million before the book was even published, and now the project has an official studio home, Paramount.
Well, it seems the film has made developments with Paramount pictures reuniting Scorsese with leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio to finance and distribute Killers of the Flower Moon.
The book by Author David Grann is about Osage tribal members being murdered after they became rich when oil was found on their land in the 1920’s.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” would be the sixth film collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio. They last worked together on 2013’s “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which was also distributed by Paramount Pictures.
